Do you only think of comfort? So it’s time to make some adjustments
In any auto school class, you learn that the first thing to do when getting into the car is to adjust seat and mirrors. It sounds simple, does not it? But do you know how to regulate the seat correctly? Do you know the order to follow?
More than comfort, this ritual involves the health and safety of vehicle occupants. With the seat properly adjusted, the driver has the necessary strength in the arms to quickly divert a hole or avoid a hit, the guarantee that the seat belt will work effectively in a collision and an additional aid in reducing the fatigue of the Body, muscle aches, and even spinal diseases.
Experts from the Brazilian Association of Traffic Medicine explain that the incorrect position of the driver, coupled with the vibration of the vehicle, causes intense muscular fatigue that can lead to severe vertebral injuries. “The driver must find his comfort zone, adjusting the seat to the pedals, which are fixed, so that they reach them effortlessly, and then at the wheel,” says ergonomic consultant João Bezerra de Meneses. “The correct thing is not to touch neither the calf nor the back of the knee on the bench.”
It is vital to remember that no just one ideal position. Sometimes you get the same effect with different combinations of settings. In fact, changing the posture is necessary for a long time at the wheel, so that the area of effort is continuously changed, without overloading a particular part of the body. A slight shift in the slope of the backrest can solve. So do take a few minutes break every two or three hours.
Whenever there is doubt whether everything is in place, take the test. Without removing your back from the seat, check that the dashboard controls and gear shift lever are on hand and are easy to use, that the instruments can be viewedeasily and that the seat belt is accurate and does not cause discomfort. All right? So just start and go.
If you can adjust the seat, do not leave it too high, to avoid pressure on the back of the knees. There should be at least three fingers away so that nerves and veins are not pressed and do not compromise circulation, causing pain and tiredness.Heated car backrest cover can help produce heat and make your back more comfort.
The spine must be fully in contact with the backrest. With good car back support can meke your spine more comfortable. The best angle is about 100 and 120 degrees. Excessive tipping increases the risk of slipping under the belt in a collision. The straighter backrest makes the muscles tense, causing discomfort.
To adjust the seat distance from the dashboard, depress the throttle or clutch to the bottom until the knee is slightly flexed. When resting, the sole should be completely in contact with the floor.
If there is height or distance adjustment, the handwheel must be positioned so that all instruments are visible, without having to move the head to read any information. The direction should not touch the thighs – leave the distance of about a fist.
Hold the steering wheel with hands corresponding to the hands of a clock in the position 10h10 or 9h15. This guarantees the freedom of movement to rotate it quickly, in thecase of an emergency diversion.
The interior mirror is the first to be adjusted, and you have to visualize the whole environment behind the car. Exteriors should keep the horizon line in the center of the mirror and show as little of the body as possible to minimize blind spots.
To find the best position of the head restraint, lift it up until the eye line is well halfway up the backrest. If possible, leave a clearance of about three fingers of the support. In thecase of an accident, it will absorb the impact more efficiently.
Adjust the seat backrest after the seat distance. When holding the steering wheel, the elbow must be slightly bent (about 120 degrees). To check, see if the hands are held together at the top of the steering wheel without taking off the shoulders of the seat.
Position the upper belt in the middle of the shoulder. Thus, in a crash, there is no risk of him hanging the driver or escaping the chest. Pull the bottom so that it does not get loose under the abdomen, making it more efficient. He should stay fair, but never tight.
